Rich, who marks every paper himself

I'm Rich. I marked IGCSE Physics (0625) and A Level Physics (9702) for Cambridge, and I've read every examiner report Cambridge published for both from 2021 to 2026. I'm not currently contracted as a Cambridge examiner. I mark every paper myself.

Paper 6 marks go on small things

Most of Paper 6 isn't hard physics. The marks go on reading an instruction exactly, giving a value to the right precision, and describing a technique for the apparatus in front of you. These are from Cambridge's examiner report on the June 2026 paper, variant 62:

Examiner report · June 2026 · 0625/62

"Vague references to avoiding parallax errors, without explaining that both surfaces should be viewed simultaneously at eye level, were insufficient."

"Many candidates calculated the difference between the two density values and were unable to proceed further."

"Many candidates started the stopwatch when the ball was released rather than when it passed the first line marked on the cylinder."

Each of these is easy to miss when you mark your own paper, because you know what you meant. That's what the marking is for: the mark you'd get on the day, and a note on exactly where each lost mark went.

Paper 6 also has the same shape every series. I checked all 39 from March 2021 to June 2026: each one is three experiment questions worth about 11 marks each, then a 7-mark planning question. 36 of the 39 split exactly 11, 11, 11 and 7. So a marked past paper is close to a rehearsal of the real one, and the habits that lose you marks on it are the ones you'd take into the exam.

What I noticed on that script

All four of his ruler readings came out a little short. I asked him to measure the graph grid on his printout: it was 14.5 cm, and on a full-size paper it's 15.0 cm. His printer had shrunk the paper, so his measuring was right, and I marked those readings on his copy.

How did he find it?

"I was always wondering why I couldn't quite get the measurements right."

"This paper was printed by my teacher and I was always wondering why I couldn't quite get the measurements right. ... I really appreciate it, especially for the in-text written explanations in the marked paper!"

Questions

Which papers count?

Any 0625 Paper 6, Alternative to Practical, from March 2021 to June 2026. I hold the question paper and the mark scheme for every one of them. Sit it timed, in one hour, and send it as you wrote it.

What if my answer is bad?

Then you'll get more out of it. Every mark you lose comes back with a note. A messy attempt shows you where your marks go, so don't tidy it up first.

Will you use my paper for anything?

No. Work you pay me to mark is never reused, anonymised or otherwise. The sample above was a free one, shown with the student's permission.

Is it a grade prediction?

No. It's the mark that paper would get under Cambridge's published mark scheme, and where the rest went. A paper on its own doesn't give a grade, but I'll tell you where that mark sits against that paper's grade boundaries.

Do I have to print the paper?

If you print it, print at "Actual size" or 100%, not "Fit to page". Paper 6 asks you to measure diagrams with a ruler, and a shrunk printout makes every reading short.
